Planet Earth

At Greenwood we are proud to follow our own philosophy which we believe gives children the healthiest start to their educational journey.

We follow a project-based approach to our planning and every year our project is Planet Earth. During term time we focus on a biweekly topic based on planet Earth starting with the continents and then looking at oceans, jungles, space, the environment, etc. During half-terms and holidays we celebrate cultural events such as Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, and Easter. During the summer holidays our topics are based on countries that our children come from, encouraging parents to come in to school and celebrate with us.

EYFS

Though we follow our own curriculum we use the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to help assess a child’s development. The curriculum is split into the three prime areas; ‘Personal, Social & Emotional’, ‘Communication & Language’ and ‘Physical Development’ and four specific areas; ‘Literacy’, ‘Maths’, ‘Understanding the World’ and ‘Expressive Art and Design’.

We believe in holistic learning and, in our planning, we integrate a number of these areas of learning within each activity. Our planning meetings are held every Friday and our interactive planning board is updated throughout the week.

A Child's Learning Journey

Each child has their own learning journey which is observed and updated by their key worker. We use ‘Famly’ software, which is an interactive app that gives parents live updates during the day as well as a daily report which includes nap times, toilet checks, meal times, activities and observations. The children’s process is then tracked throughout the year so the key workers can work alongside parents to develop each child’s strengths and weaknesses.
